What is interesting about Travelling? It’s one of those words that when used often means ‘interesting trip’ and when used very rarely means an afternoon nap in the local train station. When I was younger, my friends used to ask me what was interesting about traveling. The answers they got were always about where we were going and how long we were going to be there. There was a whole new vocabulary that they came up with to explain complicated concepts like routes, ways to reach certain destinations and so on. Of course, most of these were wrong, but that didn’t stop them from using the concept to talk about traveling.
So now I’m an adult and rather more mature in my thinking. Travelling itself is interesting for a while but the boredom usually sets in after a while. And so does anyone else that you travel with, even if you don’t travel with them all the time. You get to meet new people, see different cultures, and generally experience something that you may not have normally.
But what is interesting about traveling? To a few people it’s knowing more about a place and their history than the tourist guides that tell you everything you need to know. To some people it’s experiencing something that they couldn’t have in their own lifetimes and that makes all the difference. To still others it’s simply getting out and enjoying life.
So, what is interesting about traveling? It’s about meeting new people, experiencing things, enjoying life and the journey. It’s easy to look at a book and say ‘I want to go and visit that place’. It can be done, and you should definitely take the time to do it. But there’s so much more to it than that.
Firstly, how would you feel if you went on a crazy binge, lost your way in a foreign city, and ended up having to pay for your hotel bill for the rest of your life because you didn’t even know how to get back home? Or worse, if you drove your car into a ditch, broke a leg, and ended up spending months on the mend. Wouldn’t it be nice if you could just say ‘let’s have a go’? That’s what a book is for.
Secondly, reading books isn’t the only way to learn about interesting things. You can learn about something without actually going to the place where the information is available. The great thing about reading books is that you’ll find so many interesting things to read that you can fill up years without even leaving your house!
Thirdly, one of the best ways to really learn about a place is by traveling there. If you’re lucky enough to do so, you’ll find that there’s plenty you can do to really explore the culture and landscape. Imagine being able to walk through a city or village without being patronized by an old person. Imagine being able to speak to elderly people, drink their wine and totally understand them. It’s possible to travel.
Finally, the most important question to ask yourself as you think about what is interesting about traveling is ‘why?’ What is the reason you’re traveling? Are you traveling to see new places, meet new people or enjoy the sights and sounds of a specific region? Once you have answered that question, then you’ll be able to put your mind at ease and enjoy the whole process.
Think about this: when you’re reading a book at home, the writer has spent several years absorbing as much information as possible from the places they visit. They’ve perhaps spoken to the locals, saw local art and culture, and learnt about the history. Now, when you’re traveling, you’re simply taking in the scenery. You don’t know the people who live there, you don’t understand their history and you probably won’t get to talk to them too much. But that doesn’t mean that the experience isn’t as valuable as one would perceive it to be.
A book can only take you so far. You need to get out there and discover things for yourself. This means you need to make notes and get off the traditional route and try something different. Try visiting tourist destinations instead of just sticking to the usual tourist hotspots. While these won’t provide the same excitement as a national park or museum, you will have a more interesting time exploring things like the Victoria and Albert Museum, St Mark’s Square or Paris Picasso Museum.
In short, the answer to “what is interesting about traveling?” Is that there is always something interesting to see or do while traveling. Some of these will happen within your own country or in the vicinity of where you are traveling. Others will happen on your travels’ destination. No matter how they come about, these things are interesting, no matter where they are.
